Source: Mugi
by Arifsyah. M. Nasution, S.Si.

Takeaway: The right chart, image, or diagram can be invaluable in clarifying and conveying IT information. The trick is finding the best tool to illustrate the specific concept or type of data you’re representing.

In all areas of IT, there are a number of situations where certain ways of presenting data, configuration details, or a sequence of events work best. We often tend to rely on one tool for everything because we’re familiar with it, but that isn’t always the best approach. Here is my top 10 list of the most effective ways to visually represent IT data.

Microsoft Sold 350 Million Windows 7 Licenses

Source: PC-World

Microsoft on Friday announced that it has sold over 350 million licenses of Windows 7 in the past 18 months. The milestone points to a momentum in the adoption of Windows 7, but Microsoft didn't break down the numbers into how many copies shipped with new PCs or are upgrades.

Despite impressive growth, Windows 7 is second (with 24 percent) only to its older sibling, Windows XP, which still holds around 55 percent of the market. But Windows 7 could on track to become the most popular operating system if Microsoft continues to sell at this rate. Alex Wilhelm calculated for The Next Web that Microsoft sold over the past 18 months 450 copies of Windows 7 per minute. So to be more exact, Windows 7 will eclipse XP in 12 to 15 months, according to an ArsTechnica estimate.

Ubuntu 11.04: Small issues, big win

By: Jack Wallen
April 11, 2011, 8:47 AM PDT

Takeaway: Jack Wallen recants his original take on Ubuntu 11.04 and Ubuntu Unity. See what happened to make him so drastically change his mind about the upcoming release from Canonical.

For the last few months, on nearly every site I blog for, I have been saying that Ubuntu 11.04 was going to be a big setback for Ubuntu. This “setback” was mostly due to Canonical’s decision to use Unity as the default desktop.

After the Software Wars

This eBook explains how we can build better software and all get our own high-tech chauffeur.

The key to faster technological progress is the more widespread use of free software. Free versus proprietary (or non-free) software is similar to the divide between science and alchemy. Before science, there was alchemy, where people guarded their ideas because they wanted to corner the market on the means to convert lead into gold. Computers are an advancement comparable to the invention of movable type.

Another Lesson Learned: Clear Communication is Key

A few weeks ago, we had an issue with a new project on sf.net that looked like the established project Tiny Core Linux. A SourceForge user registered a project called “tinycorelinux” that was was not affiliated with the original project in any way except that it redistributed their binaries. The Tiny Core Linux team contacted us and asked us to remove the project.

Most of the time when we get a report of infringement, it’s a company attacking one of our projects, and our default is to ask for evidence and extend our projects the benefit of the doubt. Another common case is when a well-intentioned contributor (or fan of the project) wants to help bring exposure to the project, and help get it out into the wild, and the issue can be resolved through a few simple emails. Or sometimes, a person is trying to fork an original project and simply gets it wrong.

OK, I'll Draw You a Map - on Google

By Erika Morphy - TechNewsWorld  - 04/19/11 3:08 PM PT

Google is letting people access its crowd-sourced Map Maker tool in the U.S., opening the door to a wealth of possibilities. The most obvious use-case scenario is local advertising. Any local business that relies on foot traffic, for instance, can benefit by including itself on Google Maps via Map Maker. Like Wikipedia, Map Maker relies on the community to ensure details are accurate and up-to-date.

Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) is rolling out access in the U.S. to a tool that has already made a mark in other parts of the world: Map Maker. As the name suggests, Map Maker allows people to create and edit Google Maps.
